Business Valuations with Halo CPAs

Business Valuation & Advisory

Every major business decision — whether you are planning a transition, navigating a dispute, reorganizing, or exploring a sale — starts with one question: what is it worth? At Halo CPAs, we help business owners, shareholders, and their advisors answer that question with clarity and confidence. Based in Abbotsford, we work with clients throughout the Fraser Valley and across British Columbia.

Our valuations are prepared by a Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) in accordance with the practice standards of the CBV Institute, the recognized authority for business valuation in Canada. That means independent, objective, and defensible conclusions of value that stand up to scrutiny from the CRA, lenders, courts, and other parties who rely on them.

Why It Matters

A business valuation is more than a number. Valuation analysis gives you a different, bigger-picture perspective than accounting, audit, or tax alone — it digs deeper to identify the risks and opportunities that actually drive the value of your business. Because we bring together CPA and CBV expertise under one roof, you get valuation insight backed by a complete understanding of your accounting and tax position, all from a firm where you work directly with the partner doing the work.

Our Valuation Services

We prepare valuations of businesses, shares, and business interests for a wide range of purposes, including:

Tax & Estate Planning

Independent valuations to support corporate reorganizations, estate freezes, share transfers, and succession and estate planning, prepared to withstand CRA review. Getting the value right is critical to a tax-efficient plan and to avoiding problems down the road.

Shareholder & Ownership Transactions

Valuations to support buy-sell agreements, shareholder buyouts, admitting new owners, and capital reorganizations, so that everyone at the table is working from a fair, well-supported number.

Purchase & Sale of a Business

Whether you are buying, selling, or simply planning ahead, we help you understand what a business is worth and what is driving that value. A clear, independent valuation gives you a stronger position in negotiations and helps you make confident decisions.

Litigation & Dispute Support

Independent, objective valuation and financial analysis for shareholder disputes, family law matters, and economic loss and damages claims. We present complex financial issues in a way that is clear to all parties and can be relied upon in mediation, arbitration, or court.

Financial Reporting

Valuations prepared for financial reporting purposes, including purchase price allocations and goodwill impairment analyses, tailored to your year-end reporting requirements.

Succession & Advisory

Beyond a single report, we help owners plan for the future — understanding the value of the business today, identifying the drivers that will grow it, and preparing for an eventual transition or sale so you are ready when the time comes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chartered Business Valuator (CBV)?

cbv-logo.png

A Chartered Business Valuator is an accredited professional who specializes in determining the value of businesses, shares, and business interests. CBVs are trained and governed by the CBV Institute and their valuations are recognized by the CRA, courts, lenders, and financial institutions. Most CBVs, including ours, are also Chartered Professional Accountants.

When do I need a business valuation?

Common reasons include tax and estate planning, corporate reorganizations, buying or selling a business, shareholder buyouts and agreements, succession planning, financing, and disputes such as shareholder or family law matters. Any time an accurate, independent value is needed, a valuation is the right starting point.

What is the difference between the levels of valuation report?

Valuation reports come in different levels of assurance — from a Calculation Report through to a more detailed Estimate or Comprehensive Report — depending on the amount of review and analysis required. The right level depends on your purpose and who will be relying on it. We help you choose the most appropriate and cost-effective option for your situation.

Why does it matter that the valuation is independent?

For most purposes — especially tax filings, disputes, and transactions between parties — the value has to be objective and defensible. An independent valuation prepared by a CBV carries credibility with the CRA, the courts, and the other side of the table, which a simple estimate or rule of thumb does not.

How long does a valuation take, and what does it cost?

It depends on the size and complexity of the business and the purpose of the report. After an initial consultation, we will scope the engagement and provide a clear, upfront estimate so you know what to expect before we begin.
